Weatherford College Foundation sets record scholarship year

WEATHERFORD —

The Weatherford College Foundation has offered 212 scholarships to 126 different students for the 2014-15 academic year totaling more than $200,000.

“We believe this is the most scholarship money ever given in our foundation’s history,” foundation Executive Director Brent Baker said. “It’s very rewarding to look at a list of 126 students, knowing we’re impacting the lives of each and every one of them.”

The deadline to apply for scholarships passed in March. Students are able to apply online once per academic year and are then matched with applicable scholarships based on their field of study, hometown and other criteria.

Many students were awarded scholarships for both the fall 2014 and spring 2015 semesters. Recipients are required to meet minimum GPA standards to keep their scholarships for subsequent semesters.

This year the foundation was able to increase its standard per-semester scholarship to $1,000 thanks in part to contributions garnered in the recent capital campaign.

“The generosity of our community through the recent successful capital campaign has not only helped enhance the college’s facilities, but it has also allowed us to increase the scholarships the foundation gives to many deserving students,” foundation President Bob Glenn said. “We are excited and proud to be able to offer more than $200,000 in scholarships to enable these students to reach their educational goals.”

The Weatherford College Foundation was established in 1978 with the mission of supporting WC and its students. The Foundation has awarded more than $1 million to students since 2006.
