FORT WORTH — Dr. Oren R. “Rudi” Smith Jr., retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and physician, beloved husband and father, went home to his Lord on Saturday, April 13, 2013.
Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Thursday in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment: 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Dr. Smith was born June 19, 1933, in Sanford, Fla., son of Oren Rudolph “Shorty” Smith Sr. and Minnie Lee Hardy Smith. He graduated from Seminole High School, Stetson University and Tulane University Medical School. He married Johanna Martha Bruin, from the former Dutch East Indies, on April 30, 1960. Dr. Smith served in the Air Force Aerospace Medicine program and as an ophthalmologist for 20 years, retiring as a hospital commander in 1981. Dr. Smith practiced ophthalmology in Granbury until 1998 and appreciated his staff’s years of loyalty and concern. Following private practice, he taught at Weatherford College.
Dr. Smith was a member of numerous medical and Christian organizations, and served as a deacon in the Aledo and White Settlement First Baptist Churches and Gideons International. He lived a great life, raising a family to be proud of. He was well known for his kind and gentle spirit, humor and love of God and country. He did it all with a smile.
Survivors: wife, Johanna Bruin Smith; son, Johan Smith and wife, Edith; daughter, Ruurdje Aston and husband, Charles; grandchildren, Zephan, Schuyler, Siera and Fischer; sister, Patricia Jean Epps and husband, Wayne, of New Smyrna, Fla.; nephew, Kevin Smith; and many cousins.
