Rachael Virginia Thorp Rankin McGill

Weatherford Democrat

Rachael Virginia Thorp Rankin McGill went to Glory Thursday, July 4, 2013 at the age of 92.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central Christian Church. Burial will be in City Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Home in Weatherford.

Rachael was born March 31, 1921 in Weatherford, to William Thomas and Lillian Eva Haman Thorp. When, at the age of four, a car accident took her father’s life, her Uncle Michael Haman stepped in and lovingly raised her along with her mother.

Rachael attended Weatherford High School. She received a scholarship to attend Weatherford College, where she studied business and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. On her 90th birthday, she was honored with the Weatherford College Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award.

After graduating college, she worked as a secretary for the Federal Government at Camp Wolters near Mineral Wells, and, later, the Soil Conservation Service in Fort Worth. After taking a 14-year hiatus to be a stay-at-home mom, she returned to federal service with the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) in Fort Worth. She retired in 1979, with 24 years of service.

For many years, she actively participated in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) as well as the FHA Retirees Association. She was responsible for coordinating meetings and programs and for staying in touch with members through cards and phone calls.

Rachael gave her life to Christ at the age of 14. She considered being a Christian the most important part of her life. In 1989, she and her husband, Jimmy McGill, joined Central Christian Church where they were put to work and loved it. She faithfully served her church until her death.

Rachael will be lovingly remembered for never forgetting a birthday or any important event in the lives of her friends and family. Her cards and calls will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; aunts and uncles; her two brothers, Tommy and Jimmy Thorp; and very dear cousin, Maggie Ross.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Ogan and husband, Tom; stepson, Michael Hall and her other kids, Ginger Edwards, Penny Scott, Mike Nichols, Leslie Kehrer, Mark Nichols and Pam Walker, and their children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Parker County Paws, Central Christian Church in Weatherford, and Lighthouse for the Blind would be greatly appreciated.
