Colon Amos Sweet

Colon Amos Sweet was born March 16, 1924, and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 20, 2013. He loved God and served God enthusiastically, unwavering, faithfully and prodigiously.

Colon was born to Glen Roy and Mary Bell Sweet, in Globe, Ariz. While attending Melrose High School, Colon held several New Mexico state records in track. He was also on the football and basketball teams.  

Colon served proudly on the USS Pickens in World War II, which landed offensive military personnel on both Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He served in the United States Navy from Jan. 5, 1943, to Aug. 2, 1952.

Colon married Guinn Bennett and moved to Texas. He was a trustee for Southlake Carroll School District and served as councilman for Southlake in their beginnings. He coached many baseball teams while at Southlake, which required those playing to attend church. He sat quietly inning after inning listening to mothers tell him how to coach.

Colon worked 30 years for American Airlines, also serving for the Transportation Workers Union as a representative.  

He was a deacon of the Baptist church and served for over 25 years as treasurer at Victory Baptist Church in Weatherford.

He is survived by his wife, Guinn Sweet, of Fairfield; son, Fran Sweet, of Red Oak; daughter, Elaine Rhodes, of Aledo; daughter, Coleen Riley, of Fairfield; and daughter, Melinda Sweet. He has 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  

A celebration of his life will be at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in Fairfield, at 2 p.m. Please join us in this celebration of his life and bring your memories to share with those in attendance.
