Police: Teen murder suspect attacked staff member at facility

BOSTON — A Massachusetts teenager accused of robbing, raping and killing a popular teacher at his school attacked a female staff member at a facility where he is being held without bail, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident allegedly involving Philip Chism, 15, took place at the Department of Youth Services Facility in Boston, according to Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins.

Chism is accused in the October 2013 rape and murder of 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer of Andover at Danvers High School. Ritzer’s body was discovered in a wooded area adjacent to the school a day after the killing.

The extent of the female staff member’s injuries in the incident Monday are unclear.

Chism, meanwhile, was taken to Boston Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. He is under heavy guard by Essex County Correctional officers, Cousins said.

Information for this story was reported by the North Andover (Mass.) Eagle-Tribune.
