If you’re under 30 years old, you probably won’t remember or even understand the meaning of the term “service station.” For those of us with a little more experience in life’s game, they were at one time an integral part of our lives.
They were places you could stop your car, get out and stretch your legs, have a “Coke,” go to the restroom and have your gas tank filled for about five bucks. In addition, while you were in the restroom, the attendant would wash your windshield, check your oil, air up your tires, put water in your battery and inspect your fan belt. Before you drove away, you might also want to pick up a free roadmap of Texas or surrounding states.
Where did this part of Americana go? I would suggest the death knell was first sounded for our service stations on Oct. 17, 1973 — a day similar to Dec. 7 because it is also a day that will forever live in infamy.
