Online voters say they’ll stay under A/C

Voters in this week’s www.weatherforddemocrat.com online poll overwhelmingly endorsed air conditioning as the preferred way to battle the scorching Texas sun.
The question asked of respondents asked whether hydration, sunscreen, protective clothing or simply staying inside are the best precautions against summer heat injuries.
More than 60 percent of those voting said staying inside is best for them. Since some may have to venture outdoors, about 23 percent said hydration is key to staying healthy in the summer, while slightly more than 11 percent opt for protective clothing and less than 5 percent use sunscreen to protect themselves.
The poll is not scientific in nature and reflects only the opinions of those who voted.
According to a Web site managed by the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine, a course of action including several options is best as temperatures climb nearer triple digits, as they are expected to do this week.
To lower the risk of heat injuries: Increase your fluid intake, wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen, monitor those at high risk and schedule activities carefully.
During hot weather, the Web site states it is important to drink more fluids than your thirst indicates, especially for those age 65 and older. Avoid sodas and alcohol, as those drinks can actually hasten dehydration.
Hats and protective clothing, along with an SPF 15 or higher-rated sunscreen will protect you from sunburn and dehydration.
The organization also urges people to look after others in their group, watching for symptoms of heat-induced illnesses, which can cause a person to become confused or lose consciousness. Children and senior citizens are most likely to suffer from heat-related health issues.
Lastly, if you can’t avoid being outside, try to schedule your activities for early or late in the day, avoiding the midday sun whenever possible.

This week’s question: “Have you noticed any problems with television reception since the switch to digital broadcasting?”
