White House tours
The cancellation of the White House tours, which only cost the American taxpayers $2 million a year, is a perfect example of the pettiness of liberal politicians. Our citizens, especially our student citizens, should have the opportunity extended to them to tour the White House in Washington, D.C. I know we all want government expenditures reduced, but not on this item. I also understand the fact that the presidency is a time consuming and a very stressful seven-day-a-week job, and time off is necessary.
In my opinion, the amount of money a president can spend on vacations should be limited, and it should only be used in the USA. We should also confine the vacation to the immediate family, which would be defined as the president, his wife, children, parents and siblings. The expense of friends and more distant relatives accompanying the president should not be borne by the taxpayers, but by the president or other people involved.
Transportation and security would be an additional cost. Separate vacations by the wife and children of the president should be paid for out of the family income just as it is in all other American families. The savings on vacation expense alone would amount to many, many millions, and these savings would more than pay for the White House tours with money left over to help reduce the budget.

Occasionally, there comes a time when the drawers you have been loading with stuff that you cannot live without or should have been discarded long ago require a cleaning. I was doing that this past week and discarded a big black plastic bag of stuff. Among the things in one drawer I did find was a card which I had saved and have no idea of its source. The words on the card provided me with the perfect ending for this article. Here they are:
“If you make up your mind that you’re bound to be nobody, that’s just what you’ll be. But if you really want to amount to something, you can. It’s your choice. There are just two things you need — God! And gumption!”
