'Best Remudas' deserves an award all it’s own

Jim Jennings put his quarter horse expertise to work in his new book, “Best Remudas, Quality Quarter Horses.”
For more than 30 years, Jennings has been writing about and photographing one of America’s favorite horses, and his experience and knowledge shine through in this must-have book.
To recognize the contributions made by working ranch horses to the heritage of the American quater horse breed, the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) annually presents the Best Remuda Award.
Jennings’ book showcases these award-winning ranches in moving detail.
Starting in 1992, with the Haythorn Ranch of Nebraska, the AQHA has honored 15 ranches across the country, for their efforts in raising impressive horses.
Jennings navigates a journey through each of these ranches with breathtaking pictures and descriptive text. Each page holds small treasures of information, driven by beautifully framed photos of not only the prized ponies, but also the expansive ranch lands of each facility.
Brief vignettes depict a day in the life of these highly-notable establishments. From their rich histories to the details of their breeding programs, Jennings makes it clear to the reader why these equine establishments deserve their recognition.
A number of recognizable names find a place in Jennings’ work. New Mexico’s CS Cattle Company and Bogie Ranches are highlighted, as well as Texas’ own Pitchfork and Four Sixes Ranch.
Diving into a venture of this size is a hefty leap, but Jennings deserves a gold star for this one. He keeps the momentum going with an eye to detail and interesting information about these famed ranches, directly from the horse's mouth.
Normally a book of this size would find a place snugly secured to a coffee table, but in this case, that would be a true tragedy. This book is by far, one of the best I’ve seen in terms of content and artistry. The text is, in many aspects, just as exciting as the next awe inspiring photo, and the pages turn themselves.
Great for a horse lover or historian, or just a family book to treasure “Best Remudas, Quality Quarter Horses,” is a winner in and of itself.
