Weatherford clipped by Western Hills

For the second time in as many days, the Weatherford Kangaroos were on the losing end of the scoreboard at Raymond E. Curtis Field.

Weatherford came into Saturday’s non-district matchup against the Western Hills Cougars looking to bounce back from a one-run loss to District 4-5A foe Granbury Friday night, however, little mistakes in the early going of the game hurt the Roos and resulted in a 5-3 win for the Cougars.

“The first inning, we hit two batters and then we have a passed ball. Then, we think we are going to get out of it, we get an out and then we have a ground ball and throw the ball to the plate and the catcher forgets that the bases weren’t loaded. You can’t do that.” Weatherford head coach Terry Massey said of the loss. “We would have been out of it despite the walks and everything.

“Then, later on, we have a single, a wild pitch on a guy trying to bunt and then we have another passed ball. You can’t win like that.

“We didn’t come out ready to play today,” Massey said. “We went through the motions is what we did. We’ve got to get a little fire in our phanny and come out ready to play.”

Western Hills finished the top half of the first inning with a 2-0 lead and Weatherford responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 2-1.

Each team was held without a run over the next three innings, but the Cougars struck for two more runs in the top of the fifth to push their lead to 4-1. Western Hills eventually added another run in the top of the seventh inning after Weatherford scored in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 5-2.

After a leadoff single by pinch hitter Josh Easley, the Roos looked to put together a late-game rally. Colton Burnett followed and was hit by a pitch, putting runners at first and second. Toby Teakell flied out to center and Drew Wirsing followed with a single to load the bases. Jordan Ellington pushed home a run with a one-out walk to make the score 5-, but the inning came to an end after Colton Rhodes grounded into a fielder’s choice and Colton Matlock grounded out to second to end the day.

Matlock finished the day as the offensive leader for the Roos with three singles and an RBI in four plate appearances.
