Lady Roos brush Abilene aside, move to area round

After taking the first game Friday in Graham against Abilene, 7-0, the Lady Roos continued their roll in bi-district by beating the Lady Eagles in the second match. Weatherford freshman pitcher Jordan Wallace started the second game, played in Weatherford at Hall Field Saturday, and kept the Lady Eagles at bay for five and two thirds innings, when Hannah Schnebley came in for mop-up duty. The Lady Roos won the second game, 6-0.

On Friday, the Lady Roos struck early, scoring two runs in their first at bat, with Shawna Henderson and Randi Tongate picking up the RBIs.

In the fourth, the Weatherford girls built on their lead with four more trips across the plate. Jordan Wallace, the designated hitter, scored in the frame, along with Malorie Wakefield, Megan Askew and Henderson.

Centerfielder Henderson, picking up her second hit and second RBI, drove in Askew in the top of the final inning to give Weatherford its seven-run lead.

Schnebley shut out the Lady Eagles with a two-hit performance, striking out 10 batters in the process. The Lady Roos defense remained solid, giving up just a single miscue in the contest.

Saturday proved to be more of the same for the Abilene batters, as Wallace recorded five strikeouts in the first two innings. Wallace would finish her stint in the circle with nine strikeouts, yielding but a lone hit before Schnebley entered in the sixth. The junior hurler finished out the game striking out two of the four batters she faced, retiring all of them.

Only one runner reached scoring position for the Lady Eagles, as the Weatherford girls again showed its talent on defense.

As they had done Friday, the Lady Roos struck in the first inning, when Askew led off with a triple and Henderson brought her home with a double. Hopie Perez reached on an error but picked up an RBI, putting Henderson across home plate. Opening with three straight hits in the fourth, the Lady Roos added a run in the frame. The biggest inning for the Weatherford girls came in the sixth, when Chelsea Lee led off with a double, and McKenzie Green followed Tara Pina’s walk with a double, scoring Lee and pushing Pina to third. Two ground-out RBIs followed, with Askew and Henderson getting the credits.

The Lady Roos dominated the Abilene club, playing smart, defensive softball, timely hits and aggressive base-running. Weatherford meets the winner of the El Paso Hanks-Lubbock matchup in the area round of the playoffs. At press time, the schools had split the first two games, and were playing the rubber match in Monahans. The Region I, Area playoff for Weatherford will be at a site and time to be determined next week.
