Seven players scored in double figures for the Weatherford College Coyotes and four of those scored 20 or more as the Coyotes clobbered the Oklahoma Baptist Bison JV at Weatherford College’s Betty Jo Crumm Graber Athletic Center Wednesday afternoon.
“We can score,” said Weatherford head coach Mark Osina after the win. “We can score and shoot the ball good, we just have to keep people from scoring. Last game, we lost to Midland, but we were 14-of-24 shooting three’s. That’s shooting the ball.”
The Coyotes followed the lead of Eli Ringel, who scored 15 first half points to allow Weatherford to take a 62-27 halftime lead after trailing 10-4 to start the game, and exploded in the second half.
“The hardest part is just getting them going at first,” Osina said. “They stalled and didn’t pass it around. Getting them to try to play with a little intensity. We had to pull some groups in and out, in and out until they got going and playing hard.”
Once the Coyotes got going on offense, they proved to be unstoppable.
Ringel added seven points in the second half to finish with 22. Ringel was joined in double-digits in scoring by Miroslav Palenik, who finished with 23, Nathan Murray, who finished with 20, Arvydas Siksnius, who finished with 20, Edvinas Ruzgas, who finished with 14 and Jordan Fish, who finished with 10.
Oklahoma Baptist, which had only six players, tried to keep pace with Weatherford, but it didn’t take long for the Bison to wear down physically and mentally.
Will Mosley led Oklahoma Baptist with 15 points and Alan Ford chipped in with 12, but the height and size of the Weatherford players proved to be too much for the Bison.
Once the Coyotes put the game out of reach, it turned into a dunk contest with Murray and Siksnius taking the lead. Each player threw down one thunderous dunk after another that brought cheers from the crowd, which had all but been put to sleep by the Weatherford route.
“We’ve struggled a little bit,” Osina said. “We have played a real tough schedule and I knew when I scheduled these last two games there was a good chance of winning the games and everybody getting a lot of playing time.
“It’s just kind of a little break. We just played, last week, Midland. Coming off that schedule from Thanksgiving break, I scheduled two easy ones to kind of get back in shape and get ready to go. Basically, just to get ready for next week when we play Western Texas and Midland.”
The Coyotes are back in action at Western Texas at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Coyotes open the night’s events with a tip against Western Texas set for 5:30 p.m.
