Lady Eagles top Millsap in District 9-2A cager contest

(Continued)

Brock closed the first-quarter scoring when Jacobs stole the ball and scored on a layup as the Lady Eagles led 15-5.

With Brock poised for an early blowout, Herbel took matters into her own hands. The MHS guard drained a jumper from the left baseline, and after a Brock turnover, Herbel scored on a driving layup and was fouled. She canned the free throw to cut the Lady Eagles’ lead to 17-10.

However, those were the only points the Lady Bulldogs scored in the period.

Brock, controlling the clock and the pace of the game, closed the first half on a 7-0 run. The Lady Eagles were paced in the run by five points from Harrell, including a trey, as Brock led 24-10 at the half.

The Lady Eagles put the game away with an 18-3 run in the third quarter. Harrell went off with 10 points in the period, including a pair of three-pointers, to give Brock a commanding 42-13 lead as the game moved to the fourth quarter.

Millsap matched Brock with 15 points in the final stanza as Herbel and Carswell each scored six points.

But Brock went to its patented, patient offense in the fourth quarter that bled the clock and kept the ball away from the Lady Bulldogs as the Lady Eagles cruised to a 29-point victory.

With three sophomore starters, Berry said it will take time for his team to gain confidence it can beat a team like the five-time defending Class 2A state champions. But he added that losing to Brock does not end the season.

“I think the biggest hurdle we need to overcome is the name ‘Brock,’” Berry said.”We aren’t just playing Brock. We need to set other goals other than Brock like making the playoffs and winning playoff games.

“This game does not take away from any of our goals. I don’t want them to be so dejected that they can’t play. We will learn from this – they did a couple of things to us that we weren’t ready for and that we will need to work on – and we need to take the positives and grow from that.”
