Stamford upends Shiner for 2nd straight title

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bo Wimberly scored five touchdowns — including a go-ahead, 12-yard run with 1:55 left — to lead Stamford to a 41-28 victory over Shiner on Thursday for its second straight Class 1A Division I title.

Shiner led 28-7 with 7:35 remaining in the third quarter before No. 7 Stamford (14-1) rattled off 34 straight points to stun the Region IV champions.

Shiner (11-4) advanced to midfield with a minute left following Wimberly's 12-yard score, but Oklahoma State recruit James Washington followed up an acrobatic pass breakup with a 77-yard interception return for a touchdown to clinch the victory.

Thanks to a potent veer attack out of the wishbone, Shiner had scored on four of its first five drives, dominating the time of possession. Running back Marcus Coleman carried 24 times for 169 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Jacob Stafford rushed 25 times for 129 yards and a score.

Stamford opened the scoring on its first play from scrimmage when Wimberly threw a 63-yard strike to Washington, who caught the ball in stride with no Shiner defender within 10 yards.

Shiner then rattled off 28 straight before Stamford's defense stepped up, including a fourth-down stop at its 40 with 3:51 left in the game.

Wimberly followed the stop with a 60-yard pass to Washington to tie the game.

Washington finished with four catches for 144 yards. Wimberly completed 16 of 30 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed 10 times for 115 yards and three scores.
