Bearcats run district table with rout over TrimbleTech

Brian Smith

ALEDO — One season down, one to go.

After a 58-6 regular season ending win over Trimble Tech Friday night, Aledo’s focus is now on the postseason, something it has thrived in over the past several seasons. The Bearcats (7-0 in District 7-4A and 9-1 overall) will open Class 4A Division I play Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Newsome Field in Mansfield vs. Cleburne.

Aledo Coach Tim Buchanan admits knowing little about the Yellowjackets.

“They have a good quarterback and are a good offensive team that can put up a lot of points,” Buchanan said. “We’ll begin preparing directly.”

The Bearcat defense shined against the Bulldogs (0-7 and 1-9), forcing four turnovers and allowing 149 total yards. Aledo was particularly impressive n the first two quarters, giving up one first down and just 30 steps.

One of the four turnovers got Aledo off on the right foot just 90 seconds into the fray when Tyson Mauser picked off a D.J. McMillan pass, one of three Bearcat interceptions and returned it 13 yards for a score and a 7-0 lead. After forcing a three-and-out on the next series, Baker Roberson went 54 yards in one play for a 14-0 lead and the route was on.

Brock Parker and Carey Williams added interceptions while Garrett Barnhard recovered a Bulldog fumble to keep the visitors at bay.

With the early lead, Aledo was able to keep several players in the game.

“I think we played 75 kids tonight,” Buchanan said. “If they were on our eligible roster, we played them which is good for the kids to be able to do that. I hope it benefits us tremendously down the road to have a number of kids that can play instead of just two or three.”
