WEATHERFORD —

Roo netters improve to 2-0 in district play

Staff Report

Weatherford varsity tennis team continued early dominance in district play Wednesday, with a 15-4 win over Arlington High.

The Roos won six of seven doubles matches, following up with 9 of 12 singles matches. The convincing win  brings the Roos district record to 2-0.

Weatherford continues District 3-5A competition on Friday, hosting Paschal at the WHS courts. The matches are slated for a 4 p.m. start.

No. 17 TCU getting away with turnovers — so far

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson heard the same thing so many times about going into the Big 12.

Then Big 12 newcomer TCU went out in its first conference road game at Kansas last weekend and committed four turnovers, including three fumbles inside the 20 — and won.

“Now we do it later on, we’re probably not (winning),” Patterson said.

TCU is home Saturday against Virginia (2-1). There is then a three-week span with road games against SMU and Baylor, the only two teams that beat the Frogs last season, sandwiching their first Big 12 home game against Iowa State.

Cowboys going a long way to score this season

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys have had to go a long way to score their touchdowns this season.

Their four touchdown drives have averaged 78 yards, including a 95-yarder for their only score in the last game.

“You have to do a lot of things right to go 80 yards, 60 yards, whatever,” Romo said Thursday. “When you have a short field sometimes, it makes things a lot easier. You’re just always going out there to score points and you don’t really think about how far you’ve got to go, but obviously, that plays a role.”

But the Cowboys (1-1), who play their home opener Sunday against Tampa Bay, haven’t had a short field yet this season.
