Brock ā€˜Dā€™ pitches shutout in opener

Weatherford Democrat

BROCK — The Brock offense got out to a slow start but found its groove during Friday’s season kickoff against Gateway Charter Academy, 34-0, at Eagle Stadium.

The Eagles scored on their first drive of the game, as workhorse Slaten Gough, who would finish with a team-high 178 rushing yards, found the end zone on a 6-yard run in the first quarter. Gough would run in the two-point conversion.

Brock threatened on its next two possessions of the quarter but two fumbles resulting in turnovers derailed their plans.

With the defense hanging tough against the Gators, Brock put up two more scores in the second quarter, both passes from Seth Boleman, who split time at quarterback with Gough.

Boleman’s first pass caught Keaton Green for seven yards, followed by a Klay Marr kick, and his second found Kolbin Mills for 52 yards, also followed by a Marr kick, to make it a 22-0 game at the half.

“Our turnovers kept them in the game the first half,” Brock head coach Chad Worrell said of Brock’s two fumbles in the second quarter. “A lot of it was first-game stuff, mental mistakes.

“But overall, it was a good first game of the season and you always like to end the night with the ‘W.’”

To seal the deal, the Eagles put up two more scores in the second half to run away with the game. The first, in the third, came on a Trent Patino run for four yards. Gough topped off the scoring with a 50-yard completion to Tyler Gray to start the fourth quarter.

The Eagles also continued to press on defense, forcing one of Gateway’s four fumbles, and an interception in the fourth.

“Our defense did really well at not giving up the big plays,” Worrell said. “Our special teams and punting also looked good.”

Brock will be road warriors for the next five weeks of its inaugural varsity football schedule, beginning with a trip east to take on Dallas Episcopal. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
