Great Scot! Aledo pounds HP

No. 3 Bearcats rack up 459 yards of offense in 44-3 rout

By BRIAN SMITH

ALLEN – If Saturday night’s 44-3 win over Highland Park is any indication, it could be another banner year for Aledo.

The Bearcats, which went into the game ranked third in the state in Class 4A, rolled up a balanced 459 yards and held a Scots squad to just 199. Aledo Coach Tim Buchanan was pleased with the way his team played but said there is always room for improvement.

“We’ve definitely got a lot of work to do, but anytime you can score 44 points on Highland Park, it’s been a very good night,” Buchanan said. “I’m sure, however, that once I get home and look at the tape, we’ll find things to work on.”

Aledo scored early, marching 65 yards in 10 plays. Newcomer Ryan Newsome capped the drive with the first of his three touchdowns coming from five yards out. Chance Nevarez tacked on the extra point with less than five minutes gone.

The Bearcats went on another sustained drive late in the first, starting at their own 2 and ending the drive with another five-yard run by Davis, who rushed for 110 yards on 17 carries, for a 14-0 lead. The squads exchanged field goals, with Aledo’s Parker Shaunfield hitting the first of his three to help extend the lead to 17-3 at the half.

Aledo added a 21-yard Davis scoring run and a Shaunfield field goal while holding the Scots scoreless in the third, extending the lead to 27-3 after three quarters.

Luke Bishop got the start at quarterback and drew praise from Buchanan after going 16-22 for 177 yards.

“Luke sees the field so well,” Buchanan said.

The game was played Saturday night as part of the annual Tom Landry Classic at Allen High School’s 18,000-seat Eagles Stadium, an approximately $60 million below-grade facility that opened last year.

Aledo comes home Friday to welcome Class 3A’s top-ranked Stephenville Yellow Jackets, which won its opener, 17-16, over Monterrey Tech.

No. 3 Aledo figures to move up at least one place in the Class 4A rankings after top-ranked Denton Guyer lost its opener to Cedar Hill, 38-28. Second-ranked Cedar Park won its opener. Friday’s kickoff at Bearcats Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
