Roo wrestlers head to state meet

The Weatherford wrestling teams sent 21 wrestlers to hit the mats at the two-day Class 5A, Region I Meet held at Arlington High School last weekend.

The girls team, in just its second year of competition, put together a third-place finish at regionals and will send three to University Interscholastic League (UIL) state competition.

Bethany Jackson is the Region I Champion in the 148-pound division, and with regional runner-up Alex Herle (95-pound class) will make the trip to the state meet. Alena Kessler will also attend the meet as a state alternative should a spot in her weight class open up due to a no-show.

The boys’ team will also send three wrestlers. Nester Oviedo and Gramm Kelley earned state reservations with third-place finishes, and Alan Prince will also make the trip to Garland as an alternate. Oviedo will compete in the 170-pound division, with Kelly taking to the mats in the 220-pound class.

The UIL state meet has been moved to a more local venue for 2014. Beginning on Friday, Feb. 14 and concluding Saturday, Feb. 15, the state championships will be held at Garland ISD’s Curtis Culwell Center.

The girls’ weigh-in will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, with competition beginning at 7:30 a.m. The boys will weigh-in at 8:30 a.m. and begin wrestling an hour later, also on Thursday.

Also helping the girls earn their third-place team slot were Roo wrestlers Kassie Bransford, Taylar White and Halie Plusnick, who all had top-eight finishes.

For the WHS boys, Cole Fournier had a top-eight finish, as well.
