Lady Roos overcome sour start, beat Arlington High in district match

The Weatherford varsity girls turned fortunes around in the second quarter on Tuesday, and needed to, after a lackluster opening period at Arlington High resulted in an 8-point deficit to district-winless Lady Colts. The Roos erased most of the margin before the break, trailing by just a basket at the start of the second half.

The turnaround continued after the break, with Weatherford passing and distancing itself for a 44-34 win. The victory results in a 7-5 District 3-5A record for the WHS girls, and the opportunity to claim a playoff seed, with a little help. Lou Hawkins led the scoring on Tuesday, with 11 points, while Aidan Pool, Abbye Shearmire and Faith Woodring each added eight points.

The Lady Roos travel to play at FW Paschal on Friday, with a 6 p.m. start. WHS closes out district play on Tuesday, hosting North Crowley on Senior Night.

Porcupines hold off Lake Worth, hold on to second place in District 6-3A

Staff Report

A stubborn Bullfrogs’ offense gave Springtown a run for its money in the first half of a district game at the Pojo gymnasium on Tuesday, resulting in a 29-26 score at the end of the first half. But Springtown tightened down their defense after the break, outpacing Lake Worth for a 65-41 victory.

Cole Allen and Dalton Scott led the second-half surge for the Porcupines, and finished as the game’s high scorers, with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Kylan Gutierrez added eight, with Thomas Loving and Dylan Ray adding seven each.

With the win, Springtown improves to 5-1 in district play, with a chance to double its one-game lead over Mineral Wells on Friday, traveling to play at Ram gymnasium. Pojo  is a game behind district-leading Kennedale, headed for a rematch against the Wildcats set for Feb. 8.

Springtown’s boys and girls teams will celebrate Senior Night on Tuesday, when they host FW Diamond Hill.
