The Weatherford varsity tennis team made an impressive showing in a 16-team tournament hosted by Birdville High School last week. The A-mixed doubles team of Kelsey Buczkowski and Mootung Leamphan won second place after losing in the finals 4-6, 4-6 to a strong Birdville team.
On their way to the finals, Buczkowski and Leamphan knocked off a Southlake Carroll team 9-7 and a Byron Nelson team 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The A-girls doubles team of Katie Gremminger and Ashley Mohr finished in third place. The B-girls doubles team of Alia Gammon and Alessa Hoerner finished in second, losing a close match in the finals to Northwest 3-6, 4-6. The A-boys doubles team of Kristian Gonzales and Trey Vaszauskas finished the tournament in fourth place, after losing a close one to a team form Richland High. The varsity team is idle this week, traveling to the Richland tournament on Friday, Feb. 15.
The JV tennis team competed in the Seguin tournament on Monday. The Weatherford girls swept the tournament winning first place in three categories. Emily “Chuck” Norris won first in girls “A” singles, Megan Murrell took first in girls “B” singles and the doubles team of Mackenzie Greer and Willow Griffith won first place in girls “A” doubles.
