Henard tops in Parker County field

Accomplishments at team, individual levels perhaps most prolific ever

WEATHERFORD —

Brock’s Amy Henard proved to be the most valuable of a bumper crop of high-calibre prep volleyball players. Henard, who led the Lady Eagles to their first-ever state volleyball championship, displayed proficiency in virtually every aspect of her game — from setting to serving, from  digging to kills — and is named the All-Parker County Most Valuable Player.

The volleyball programs in Parker County made new strides in 2012. While there have certainly been no shortages in the local talent pool in past years, the heights reached by the area prep teams  in the season just completed could be hard-pressed to find an equal.

The melting pot of accomplishments for local teams, and the individual kudos for its elements, is impressive, to say the very least.

> The 2012 season produced three  undefeated district champions (Aledo, Springtown and Brock) in Parker County. There were also two district runners-up (Peaster and Poolville).

> Two of the district title holders advanced all the way to the state tournament. Brock won the Class 2A state volleyball title, while Aledo fell in the Class 4A state final match. Springtown  climbed the Class 3A bracket to the regional tournament, falling to eventual state champion, Abilene Wylie.

> Five area athletes were named to the 2012 All-State team, while two of those were selected to play in the All-Star games.

> Eight student-athletes from Parker County earned listings on the State All-Academic rolls. Brock went 4-for-4, with all of its seniors (Abbey Drillette, Braylee Flaska, Amy Henard and Kyndall Magyar) making the list.

> In All-District voting, four athletes were selected MVP in their respective districts.

> There were 17 volleyball athletes from Parker County named to the All-District Superlatives, and three coaches — Kathy Goings (Aledo), Leighann Strickland (Springtown) and Keith Guyon (Brock) — were named Coach of the Year. Goings was also selected Coach of the Year for Class 4A/5A.

The sheer domination of many of the area squads at the team level makes it tough to analyze individual performances at a statistical level. When a team – in this case two — navigates through its district schedule without losing a single set, one is forced to look at per-game performance instead, of just total numbers.

And, of course, numbers alone do not always tell the tale. The intangibles of leadership, and other qualities one cannot enumerate on paper, are often just as important as the proclivity for volleyball skills.

The superlative selections, regardless of the monicker, cannot do justice to the overall body of work for most of the athletes in the 2012 APC, and are designed to recognize overall excellence in the sport. The same can also be said for the entire roster. With the level of play for area teams and individuals for the season just past, the wealth of talent, for seniors as well as the underclassmen returning the courts next year, is formidable.
