Ladycats headed back to McCombs; Pilot Point ends Lady Eagles run

Aledo 2, Frenship 0

After a 5-year hiatus, Aledo softball will be one of four Class 4A teams taking the field at the UIL State Softball Tournament this Friday — hoping for an encore on Saturday. The Ladycats pushed across a pair of runs, one in the fourth, with an insurance run in the sixth, a sufficient advantage for Aledo pitcher Lauren Craine and the Ladycats defense.

Craine surrendered just three hits and Aledo fielders played errorless ball against Wolfforth Frenship, as the AHS girls won the second game of the best-of-three series, 2-0, to claim the Region I berth in Austin.

Laedo played definite small ball to put the winning run on the board. After Rhylie Makawe led off the fourth with a double, Chickie Cook's sac bunt pushed Makawe to third and Kayden Kirkpatrick poked a single up the middle for the only RBI Aledo would require. Aledo took advantage of a couplr of Frenship errors in the sixth to tack on the extra run.

Aledo last graced Red and Charlene McCombs Field in 2008, finishing the job of bringing home a title with a 15-inning marathon over Nederland in the 4A final.

The Ladycats 2013 semifinal opponent will be the Foster Lady Falcons, who won the Region III title with a 5-2 win over Ridge Point. Aledo and Foster will meet at McCombs on Friday, at either 9 a.m. or noon.

Pilot Point 11, Brock 0

A Friday rain-out and venue change did not work in the Lady Eagles' favor in the second game of the Class 2A Region II final on Saturday, as the Pilot Point offense stepped into the batter's box with hot bats at Prosper.

Scoring two, three and two runs in the first thre frames while Brock tried to get something going, the Lady Cats added four more runs in the bottom half of the fifth to end the game, and Brock's season, early. Pilot Point earned their berth at the state tourney, winning 11-0.

Brock could not figure out PP pitcher Skylar Cagle, particularly on this game, with Cagle ceding only three hits.

The Lady Eagles conclude their 2013 campaign with considerable success as District 9-2A champs, Region II semifinal winners.

  • Fitting the pieces together

That coaches will move on, due to advancement of career, life changes or a myriad of other influences, is a given. Aledo is not immune to the turnover, but is year-in and year-out apt to experience very modest changes, due to another myriad of positive factors.
