Colts win ugly over Roos

WEATHERFORD —

Nearly half of the combined real estate covered on Friday, as the Weatherford Kangaroos hosted Arlington High’s Colts in a District 3-5A football contest, was preceded by flying yellow flags. The officials crews may well be soaking sore arms in hot water this weekend, due to the combination of penalties incurred by both teams in the match.

Before the first snap, a false start began the flag fest and the laundry flew through most of the night. And although the Roo defense and special teams were able to wrest the ball from Arlington on three different occasions, the Colts were able to cross the goal line enough times to stave off their own mistakes en route to a 42-14 win over Weatherford.

WHS managed to capitalize on at least one of the Colts’ miscues midway through the second quarter. Sparked on the first play of the possession by a 21-yard Grant Werts to Tony Rodriguez pass, Weatherford drove 44 yards in eight plays, capped by a rare under-center snap and 1-yard touchdown plunge by senior QB Colton Mallory.

The score stemmed a big momentum shift from the Colts, who had already scored twice in the quarter and appeared headed for paydirt again with good field position when the Roos snatched the loose ball on a Colts punt return.

But with a 20-7 lead out of the locker room, Arlington scored on its next two possessions to increase the margin. A 12-yard pass from Connor Huffman to Dontha Robinson capped the first drive and a 1-yard run by Raymond Sheard put the game virtually out of reach midway through the third period.

In between the Colts’ third-quarter forays into the end zone, Weatherford had its highlight of the night, when Mallory broke past the first two layers of the Arlington defense and had a foot race with the Colt defensive backs.

Showing speed the senior has not been able to put on display very often this season, Mallory outran the pursuing backs , resulting in a 63-yard touchdown run.

The score put the Roos back to a two-possession deficit which swelled to three when Arlington answered on its next drive.

Weatherford is home again on Friday, celebrating Homecoming and hosting Paschal.
