Hicks’ heights nets HoF nod

WHS Athletic Hall of Fame

The Weatherford High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee will conduct its 9th-annual induction ceremony on Saturday. The ceremony will take place in the Jerry Durant Auditorium at Weatherford High School. There will be a light brunch starting at 9 a.m., with the program beginning at 9:45. Four individual athletes and one team will be inducted for the HoF Class of 2012.

One of the individual inductees will be Mark “Scooter” Hicks, one of the top running backs in the state during the 1973 and 1974 football seasons. Hicks  gained more than 2,000 yards in 10 games his junior year, and topped 1,000 yards his senior year in just five games, before a leg injury ended his season. He scored 25 touchdowns in the 15 games.

In 1973, the junior back was named All-District and was considered the district’s premier back. In 1974, he was selected All-District again, despite his shortened season. Hicks was also named to the 1973 All-State team, and All-State Honorable Mention in 1974.

Gordon Wood, famed coach of the Brownwood Lions said of Hicks, “We can’t stop #11, we can only hope to keep him under 300 yards.”

In track and field, the Weatherford athlete was also an outstanding pole vaulter. In 1973, he was a regional qualifier and a state qualifier his senior year. In 1974, he was named “Trackster of the Year” for WHS. He held the pole vault record from the seventh grade through the high school level.

In addition to his athletic awards, Hicks received several other honors while at WHS, including Young Texan of the Month, elected class vice-president, and was named to the Top Ten Who’s Who of the Senior Class.

After leaving WHS, the graduate attended McMurray College on a track scholarship, later transferring to Weatherford Junior College with a music scholarship, and attending WJC from 1975 to 1977.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
