The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ poll released on Monday was quite bullish on Class 2A’s District 9. Boys’ teams from the local district took up three of the top six spots in the 25-team selections.
Brock held the top spot in the state’s Class 2A basketball rankings, with Ponder and Peaster following at fourth and sixth, respectively.
Thus far in district play, including Tuesday’s Brock-Ponder match, the three teams have been beating up on each other while collectively beating up on the rest of their district foes. But there are contests yet to be decided.
Brock struck the first blow in the triad of competition, handily beating Ponder back in December. But the Eagles fell to Peaster in their first meeting and the first game of the new year, in a contest still in doubt to the last second.
The win put the undefeated Greyhounds in the district’s catbird seat — temporarily, until Ponder added the first loss to Peaster’s record the next week.
With Peaster drawing a bye on Tuesday, the district race got more interesting as the Lions topped Brock in a 49-48 thriller, splitting their two meetings and setting up another showdown with the ‘Hounds in a week (provided everyone holds serve until then).
Though the polls are sometimes fickle, the trio could very well find themselves at the top of the list again next week.
