While Aledo fans were treated to “business as usual” with another Bearcats display of domination, the bonus of a milestone would come to bear in the second quarter.
After a “false start” of the celebration for the consecutive point-after kicks record (state and national) from earlier in the season, the official mark would be set by Aledo senior Chance Nevarez. The boot after Luke Bishop tossed a 22-yard scoring strike to Newsome tied the mark of 172, set by Southlake Carroll’s Drew Brown earlier this season.
Jess Anders’ 17-yard run, the second TD of the quarter, set up the undisputed record-breaking kick by Nevarez. The senior would finish the night at consecutive PAT kick No. 177, and still without a miss.
But, the excitement of the kicking game was not over on this night. The final score of the game, with two minutes remaining in the contest, came off the foot of kicker Parker Shaunfield, who set up from 52 yards out and put the ball through the uprights.
Regardless of the final results of the bi-district match, Buchanan says the score is not an indication of the opponent as much as the level of play by Aledo.
“[The competition] did get tougher tonight. The difference is that our kids stepped it up a couple of notches, and played extremely well,” Buchanan said. “Our defense was just great — the way they played tonight was just unbelievable.”
Aledo will meet Saginaw Boswell in the Area round on Friday, taking on the Pioneers in a 7:30 p.m. game at Birdville ISD’s FAAC, located in North Richland Hills.
Boswell gained its foothold in the area round with a 42-7 win over Wichita Falls Rider.
