Jackets run Pojo from playoffs

JUSTIN — In a game setting of chilly temperatures with a constant drizzle, the Springtown Porcupines saw their season end Friday night with a 63-21 loss to Stephenville at Northwest ISD stadium.

The Yellow Jackets received the opening kick and took advantage of a 44-yard run by Kaegun Williams to set up Jarrett Stidham’s 1-yard plunge at the one-minute mark.

Springtown had its chance in the ensuing possession, getting opportune field position at its own 41-yard line. Perhaps a testament to the light rain, the Porcupines went three-and-out, following back-to-back dropped passes.

Again, the Yellow Jackets marched downfield, scoring with 7:32 to play in the opening period on Luis Luna’s 2-yard run. Luis Garcia’s kick after made it 14-0.

A Springtown error gave the ball right back to Stephenville when a Porcupine bobbled the ball and the Jackets recovered to retain possession. Williams’ 8-yard rush made it a 21-0 game. Stephenville added another TD before the end of the quarter.

The Pojo defense, which held Stephenville to seven points in the second half, forced the game’s first turnover, with less than a minute to go in the opening quarter. The drive yielded nothing as the Porcupines turned the ball over on downs.

The Yellow Jackets scored back-to-back touchdowns to open the second period, but Springtown finally broke their offensive drought when Landry Turner found Ryan Snow for a 76-yard rumble. Eric Avalos made it 41-7 with eight minutes left.

After another Stephenville touchdown, the Pojo special teams gave Springtown a chance to score when a player recovered a punt after the ball had touched a Yellow Jacket player. Despite getting into Stephenville territory, the Porcupines would forced to punt, and Stephenville closed out the half with an 8-yard touchdown completion from Stidham to Luna for a 56-7 score.
