Aledo takes Game 1 in regional final
The Aledo Ladycats moved a step closer to a return to Austin on Friday, facing Wolfforth Frenship at Abilene Christian University’s Poly Wells Field. The Class 4A, Region I best-of-three series winner earns a berth in the UIL state tournament.
The Ladycats got the first leg up, beating Frenship 5-2.
Aledo drew first blood in the contest, scoring the first run on a double off the bat of Allie Arneson, then another on a Chickie Cook sacrifice fly.
Aledo added another score in the second, but Frenship answered with a 2-RBI homer for a 3-2 tally at the end of two frames.
Aledo hurler Lauren Craine and the Ladycats defense stiffened for the balance of the game, while the offense was not yet through for the contest.
With two outs in the sixth, Arneson started another rally with her fourth hit on the night after Haylee Bowden reached on an error. Rhylie Makawe cleaned the ducks off the pond with a two-bagger blast to the center field wall.
Aledo quashed a Frenship near-rally in the bottom of the sixth leaving two base runners stranded, and sent the Lady Tigers down in order to close out the seventh.
Game 2 was set to be played at noon on Saturday.
