Local young rider captures top cutting prize

Staff Report

Nine-year-old Weatherford resident Grace Ornelas (at right) had her first major win at the Oklahoma City Non-Pro Cutting event recently, at the Oklahoma State Fair grounds. After placing third in the Youth Division and winning more than $330 in prize money, Grace then competed in the 2000 Limited Rider event in a field of 39 riders, competing against primarily adults.

Tying for third place with four other riders qualified Grace for the event finals. Riding atop Reynshine, owned by PJ Cutters, LLC, and trained by her dad, Pedro Ornelas, she recorded the highest score (220 points) in the finals to take first place, winning more than $4,300, a championship buckle and horse blanket, while also earning her first major win in the cutting world.

Grace is the daughter of Kristen and Efren Martinez of Weatherford, and Pedro and Janee Ornelas of Annetta.
