Weatherford quartet concludes state games with relay gold

Eight local swimmers qualify for 2015 National Meet

— Staff Report

The City of Weatherford Parks and Recreation Swim Team foursome of John Russum, Travis Prince, Dylan Wright and Jeremiah Carlson captured gold in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay for 13-14 year-olds at the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation’s (TAAF) State Games of Texas Swim Meet, held in Corpus Christi from July 25-28.

The relay team swam to a nail-biting first place finish with a winning time of 1:47.43, followed by Lake Jackson (1:47.67) and McKinney (1:48.12) in the meet’s final event.

The national qualifying boys were not the only Water Roos to bring medals back home. Other medal winners for the city team include Gabby Huggins, who swam to a silver in the 50 backstroke and a bronze medal in the 50 freestyle.  Huggins also competed in two other events, placing 6th in the 100 individual medley and 8th in the 50 butterfly.

Jaelle Carlson also took home a bronze for her performance in the 25 freestyle along with an 8th place finish in the 100 individual medley, while first-year team member Victoria Glover also found considerable success in Corpus, finishing 3rd in the 50 breaststroke, 6th in the 100 individual medley, 7th in the 100 freestyle and 10th in the 50 freestyle.

Jeremiah Carlson also brought home a medal with his 3rd place performance in the 200 Freestyle. He also showed well  in the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke, swimming to a 9th-place and a 15th-place, respectively.

Individual event participants or relay teams placing in the top three  at the state meet qualify for the State Games of America (SGA) National Meet, held every two years.

The eight Water Roos qualifiers from this year and next year’s state meet qualifiers will be eligible to compete in the 2015 SGA National Meet, which is slated to be held in Lincoln, Neb.

The 2013 National Meet, with qualifiers from the previous two years, is currently being held in York, Pa., this week, and will conclude on Sunday.
