WACO — Baylor ace Whitney Canion was named Big 12 pitcher of the year for a second time by league coaches.
Canion’s second honor came five years after she was named pitcher of the year as a freshman in 2009.
Canion has gone 26-9 with a 1.43 ERA and 10 shutouts heading into the Waco regional on Friday at Getterman Stadium. The left-hander has struck out 244 batters in 195 1/3 innings while holding opponents to a .168 batting average.
“I’m really proud of Whitney because she’s a great ambassador for Baylor,” Baylor coach Glenn Moore said. It’s a sign of the respect the conference has for what she’s done for softball in the Big 12.”
Canion was named to the all-Big 12 first team for the fourth time in her career after making it in 2009, 2011 and 2013. She ranks third on the Big 12 career wins list with 118.
Editor’s note: Whitney Canion is a former student-athlete of Aledo High School. Canion led the Ladycats to the Class 4A State Softball Championship in 2008, pitching 15 innings in the final against Nederland.
