— Staff Reports

A pair of dramatic contests decided a Class 4A Region I Quarterfinal baseball series played on Thursday and Friday. Aledo punched out eight runs in the final two frames to win Game One, 8-3, then swept the best-of-three set against Birdville with a walk-off win in Friday’s match, 2-1. Both games required an extra inning.

Down a couple of runs entering the top of the seventh on Thursday, the Bearcats took advantage of a pair of free passes and a Hawks error to tie the contest.

Aledo saved its best offensive inning until the last, scoring six runs in the top of the eighth, fueled by  a lead-off single and followed by Birdville’s second error of the game. An intentional walk led to four subsequent singles and a double as Aledo hitters put the game out of reach, though Birdville rallied or a run in their final at bat.

Aledo’s Taco Anderson and the Birdville hurler turned the second contest into a pitcher’s duel, with the Bearcats’ bats again answering the call in the extra inning. Dakota Durant singled home Tyson Mauser to seal the win, and the series, as Aledo advances to the Region I Semifinal round. Anderson scattered five Birdville hits while striking out seven.

While Aledo was eliminating Birdville, Woolfforth Frenship was doing the same to Lubbock High, handily sweeping the Westerners, 9-2 and 12-4. The Bearcats (28-6) and Tigers (31-7) will square off this week at McMurry University’s Walt Driggers Field in Abilene. Game 1 is set for Friday in a best-of-three match, with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. Saturday’s second game is tentatively set at 1 p.m., with a third game to follow, if needed.

Aledo Ladycats near climb into Region I final with sweep over Frenship

In a contest reminiscent of Aledo’s district-game tendencies, the Ladycats poured 11 runs across the plate in their first two at bats in Thursday’s opening match of a Class 4A Region I Semifinal best-of-three series. Aledo won, 13-0, while blistering the Frenship pitching for 19 hits. The offense added two more runs in the fourth while Aledo pitcher Lauren Craine hurled a 3-hit shutout, and the Lady Tigers were done for after five.

After taking a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning, Aledo cut off a Frenship rally in the bottom half when the Lady Tigers cut the lead in half with three runs.

At press time, the Ladycats were ahead 6-3 coming to bat in the top of the sixth inning. Check www.weatherforddemocrat.com for final results.
