Tracksters make run at Junior Olympics qualifying

Familiar faces who have been hitting the track at Hall Middle School beginning in May for the past several years are also reaching familiar heights, and beyond.

The Weatherford-based Mach I Track Club, sporting athletes from ages 8 to 18, has shown steady growth and notable stability over past decades. Its young runners (and jumpers) have honed pre-middle school and high school skills under the tutelage of the coaching core of the Torres brothers (Lupe, Luis and Antonio), along with a healthy contingent of other volunteer coaches, as well.

Beginning on May 10 of the 2014 track season, Mach I has had a weekly diet of competition, culminating with the Region 12 USATF Association Meet held at Springtown’s Athletic Complex on June 19 - 21.

Mach I TC qualified 24 of its athletes, who will be competing in more than 30 events at the Regional Meet, slated for July 9-12 in San Marcos. Due to the quality of athletes from the Region 12 pool, the top 12 finishers from each event qualified for the San Marcos meet.

Athletes at the regional meet will be vying for a chance to go to the U.S. Junior Olympics national competition. The Mach I TC members are especially keen to put best finishes forward, as this year’s National Meet will be held in Texas, at Humble’s Turner Stadium.

Coach Lupe Torres said the local venue, aside from being a closer destination (the national meet was held in Greensboro, NC last year), prompted the regional committee agreed to allow more qualifiers in 2014, a boon for Mach I and the other Texas-based clubs.
