Ladycats, Bearcats enter big week

Staff Report

Aledo softball returns to the ultimate stage on Friday, while AHS baseball aspires to follow suit this week.

Ready to exact a different outcome in 2014, the Ladycats will again take McComb’s Field against Buda Hays’ Lady Rebels in the UIL State Tournament Semifinal. Hays is the reigning Class 4A State Champion, beating Lucas Lovejoy for the title after eliminating the Ladycats.

The Ladycats (31-4) will take the field at noon on Friday against Hays (31-5). The first 4A semifinal of the day, pitting undefeated Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill (32-0) against Ennis (37-5), begins at 9 a.m.

Aledo’s Bearcats are vying for the Class 4A Region I championship, playing the first game of a best-of-three set on Thursday. Only Lubbock Monterey (34-10), who eliminated Cleburne in the semifinal round, stands between Aledo and a trip to the state tourney at Round Rock’s Dell Diamond.

Aledo displayed considerable resilience, and cool heads, in its semifinal round, coming from behind in both games in the sweep over Wolfforth Frenship last weekend.

The Bearcats face Monterey at Hardin Simmons University’s Hunter Field for the entire series, with Game 1 slated for Thursday, at 8 p.m. Friday’s game begins at 7 p.m. If a rubber match is required, the teams return to Hunter Field on Saturday, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
