As the summer heat begins to prevail, so too do summer’s athletic camps

Summer athletic camps for June

Although a few camps heralded the start of summer athletic camps last week, in the second full week of June the momentum really builds, as there are a couple of handfuls of endeavors available from which to choose, beginning June 9.

Later in the month, and again in July, Weatherford College will offer baseball camps. The camps are organized by WC head coach Jeff Lightfoot who has more than 500 wins as head coach at the college level.

Lightfoot is assisted by new pitching coach and Weatherford native Chad Massengale who brings experience from all levels of college baseball including NJCAA and NCAA Division 1, as player and coach. The remainder of the staff will be made up of former and current Coyote baseball players with college and pro experience.

This listing will include the balance of July camp starts in the Sports section for Sunday, June 15. Coaches and camp directors who do not see their June camps listed here may send details to Most camps welcome first day walkups. Contacts are listed to confirm deadline information.

Note: WISD’s ComEd website includes a comprehensive listing of additional athletic courses offered through its program.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
