Martin defense rushes Myles ahead in 47-3 tilt

Garrett-led D-line stifles Roo offense as Warriors roll in second half

A subsequent pass interference gave Martin a first and goal on the Roo nine. After another forced incompletion and with time expiring, the defense jammed up the Martin line, and the ball carrier to preserve the 10-point margin going into the locker room.

“Regardless of what the final score was, I think a lot our kids found themselves [during those two series],” Nelms said. “After we put the ball on the ground, they could have easily given in at that point, but they dug in, and that was a big deal.

“Some folks may doubt this, but we are getting better every week, and that includes how the character of these kids has gotten better.”

The second half saw more of the same from the Martin/Garrett defensive contingent, and running back Nic Smith broke long runs, which kick-started the Martin offensive attack.

The Roos head out to Arlington for their next district match, meeting up with Arlington High, who is also 0-2 in district play, losing to Arlington Lamar on Friday, 24-14.

The Weatherford/Arlington match is set for 7:30 p.m. at UTA’s Maverick Stadium.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
