WC alumnus finishes second at College National Finals Rodeo

— Staff Report

Former Weatherford College rodeo athlete Clayton Shaw won the reserve national championship in tie-down roping at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, Wyoming Saturday night.

The Tarleton State University senior and Decatur native turned in scores of 8.9, 10.0, 9.8 and 10.4 over four days to secure second place overall in the national competition. Shaw, who is graduating from TSU in December, will begin his pro rodeo career in Reno June 20.

Cadee Tew, another WC alumnus now competing for TSU, finished third in the women’s national All-Around title standings after taking third place in team roping and winning the second round of breakaway roping.

“Our former students were all outstanding,” said Johnny Emmons, WC rodeo coach. “It’s great to see them go on to universities and do so well on the national stage.”

Current WC competitor Landon Williams and team roping partner Chase Williams (TSU) finished 28th out of 50 teams. It was the ninth consecutive season in which the Coyotes have had a representative in Casper.

“Landon didn’t have a great CNFR, but he’s one of the most talented ropers we have had here at WC,” Emmons said. “He has consistently placed in both team roping and tie-down roping over the past couple of seasons. He’s coming back for a third season this fall, and I expect he’ll return to the CNFR next summer, hopefully in both events.”
