Brock wins Class 2A crown

GARLAND —

Early on in the Class 2A state championship match between the Lady Horns of Schulenburg and Brock on Saturday, it was apparent the Lady Eagles walked onto the court with one goal in mind. The Brock girls had provided their fans with a 5-set thriller on Thursday, at the Curtis Culver Center, but this day was about enjoying the trek toward the championship.

Working through the expected early-match jitters that resulted in a few errant serves in the first game, the Lady Eagles quickly shifted into a recurring pattern, allowing the Lady Horns to hang close early before wearing them down to close out each game. Brock won the state title in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.

Lady Horns’ point runs were short-lived after Brock took the lead in each of the three games.

“Our girls were extremely confident coming into this match,” Guyon said, “and I told them ‘you’re prepared, you’re ready, trust yourselves and your teammates and it will happen.’”

Led by senior Amy Henard, who was selected the MVP of the championship match, the Lady Eagles settled into a workman-like groove, attacking with well-placed shots with as much frequency as overpowering kills.

Henard, who has had experience at the state level on two championship basketball teams, expressed the joy of the volleyball team joining the mix.

“It’s amazing, the calibre of athletes and the success in sports we have at Brock,” she said. “It’s an honor for me to be a part of it.

“The four of us (the seniors) really wanted this bad — not just for ourselves but for coach.”

Brock’s four seniors are Henard, Braylee Flaska, Abbey Drillette and Kyndall Magyar.

Each of the games took on a common progression, with Schulenburg coming into each set with renewed vigor, only to be worn down by the Lady Eagles defense and creative point production.
