Sooner catcher transfers to Weatherford College

WEATHERFORD —

University of Oklahoma baseball player Hunter Lockwood is transferring to Weatherford College and will be playing for Jeff Lightfoot’s squad beginning in January.

Lockwood was named to the 2012 All-Big 12 freshman team after a successful freshman year at first base, catcher, third base and designated hitter.  The L.D. Bell graduate tied for second in the Big 12 in home runs with 11.

“Hunter is a guy that we expect to immediately step in and make an impact in our lineup,” Lightfoot said. “It’s rare that a freshman can step into the Big 12 and put up those numbers, he is a true offensive talent.”

At WC, Lockwood will have the opportunity to focus on playing catcher full time. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 17th round out of high school, but decided to play college ball instead of heading directly to the Angels system.

“Hunter was drafted out of high school as a catcher,” Lightfoot said. “We are excited about what he brings to the table defensively as well. I think he sees an opportunity to come to a club that has a chance to do some special things in 2013.”

Lockwood was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on April 2 after batting .429 with two homers, eight RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage.  He started in 50 of OU’s 54 games last season.
