Let ‘The Show’ begin

Staff Report

The long bracket climb has reached its zenith for 11-man football, culminating with the three-day extravaganza at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The 10-game slate is a veritable fan feast, not only the high-point for school-specific loyalists, but for the high school football diehards who travel in from far and wide.

Stamford and Shiner provide the literal and configurative kickoff for the state finals, which will expand yet again next year when six-man football will be added to the mix. Thursday will feature four championship contests to decide the championships for both divisions of Class 1A and 2A.

The Class 3A finals are rather unique, in that the Division I finals serves up the “Bulldog Bowl” (Kilgore vs. Carthage) and Division II matches Eagles vs. Eagles (Argyle vs. Fairfield — likely a Texas high school trivia question for the ages.

Aledo’s record-setting season comes to its conclusion on Saturday, as the opening fare for the final day of the unique gathering at one place and one long weekend. The Bearcats, who gathered themselves in the second half to put Ennis away in last week’s semifinal match, will meet up with a familiar foe to most of the Aledo coaching staff, though none of the varsity players, who were eighth-graders or younger and perhaps in the stands when Aledo met, and beat, Brenham four years past.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
