WC cagers enter conference play Saturday

Staff Report

Weatherford College tips off the conference basketball season Saturday at the Betty Jo Crumm Graber Athletic Center, located on the WC campus.

The Lady Coyotes and Coyotes begin North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTCJAC) play against Hill College on Saturday. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m., with the men tipping off at 4 p.m.

Bob McKinley’s squad is 6-2 overall going into Saturday’s game, riding a four-game winning streak.  The Lady Coyotes have won conference titles in five of the last seven seasons, including last year’s team, who advanced to the national tournament.

Mark Osina looks to bring the Coyotes back into the conference title race in 2014. In his first full season back at WC, his team is 7-8 overall after facing a tough slate of non-conference foes.

The Coyotes last won the conference title in 2007-08, which was Osina’s last season in Weatherford before moving on to Mercer University.

Bre Brooks is leading the Lady Coyotes in scoring with 18 points per game, followed closely by Itiana Taylor at 17. Zippy Khasoa is averaging eight rebounds in her freshman season.

Freshman Tonko Vuko leads the Coyotes, with 15.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
