Brock, Aledo in latest Top-10 coaches’ poll

Staff Report

As of the latest Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, the Brock Eagles remain atop the Class 2A rankings. Brock suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, to Class 3A Kennedale, but should remain at the top position in the next THSBCA vote, with its 22-1 record.

The Aledo nine are still resident in the Top-10 of the Class 4A rankings. The Bearcats sport a 20-2 overall mark and are currently ranked sixth.

Kangaroos manhandle Bowie, Swain rules

Staff Report

The Weatherford Roos’ first at bat started with a bang — a couple, actually — with Tony Rodriguez hitting a leadoff double and Chase Zamarron bringing his teammate home with a triple in a District 3-5A game on Tuesday at Curtis Field.

A mixed of advancement methods including, a sac grounder and a wild pitch contributed, as the WHS boys put up four runs against visiting Arlington Bowie in the first frame, and kept the upper hand for the duration  to beat the Vols in five innings, 10-0

While pitcher Andy Swain was effectively shutting down Bowie, the Roos added two more plate crossings in the third and hit the magic number with four more in the bottom of the fourth.

Swain no-hit the Vols through five, striking out six hitters. The Roo defense was errorless behind Swain.

Mason Preiss’ bases-loaded double in the fourth yielded three RBIs, while Tony Rodriguez and Blake LaGrassa each had two hits.

Weatherford travels to play Arlington Martin on Friday.

Ponder wins return match vs. Lady Eagles

Staff Report

Ponders’ Lady Lions got an early start in the District 9-2A softball contest played at Ponder of Monday, and took a 2-game lead in the standings over Brock, beating the Lady Eagles, 9-4.

The hosts put runs on the board in each of the first four innings to take a formidable lead, and though Brock tried to mount a rally in the final frame, Ponder’s Jessica Orozco ended the Lady Eagles’ efforts after a pair.
