WEATHERFORD —

Roos cagers begin season with close Burleson matches

Staff Report

Junior Ryan Merrill helped keep the Running Roos ahead of the Elks for the majority of the game at Burleson, as Weatherford opened its 2012-13 season on Tuesday. The Elks cam back to edge the Roos in a low-scoring affair, 33-30.

Merrill finish the game with 10 points and six rebounds on the night, followed by sophomore Brandon Gotcher and juniors Collin Boswell and Tony Rodriquez, all with six points each. Rodriguez, with just one practice coming off the football season, provided a defensive spark, nabbing four steals on the night.

Freshman Lane Guest led the junior varsity with nine points off the bench, with sophomores Reese Combs and Braden Riebe contributing eight points each. The JV was edged by Burleson, 44-41, making a comeback to tie the score at 30 after being down by 12 early in the match.

Trying to get on track after recovering from a rash of injuries, the youthful Weatherford varsity team stays on the road Friday, taking on the South Hills Scorpions in Fort Worth, with the JV also making the trip.

The teams will return for the home opener of the season on Monday against the Haltom Buffaloes. Game times for both contests are 6 p.m. (JV) and 7:30 p.m.
