Henard ‘sets’ sights on state tourney, next step

Brock senior Amy Henard has already had a very good week, and it could get even better before all is said and done. The senior has committed via letter-of intent to take her volleyball career and education to the next step, signing to play for the Mean Green at the University of North Texas.

With one goal checked off, Henard has another about to come to fruition.

“My dream since I began high school was to a state championship, not only in basketball, but also in volleyball,” Henard said during the large gathering this week to celebrate her signing. “It took until my senior year to get there, but it has been totally worth it.”

All-state volleyball recognition in past seasons, and an appearance on the national stage this summer with an accomplished select team assured interest from Division I schools. Henard’s preference to stay relatively close to home may have narrowed the field, but it was no deterrent to finding a second home.

“In my very first visit to UNT, I just fell in love with the place,” she said. “I got to meet the [team members] and hang out in the dorms for a bit.

“I just loved UNT so much. There was no doubt I wanted to go there.”

The more immediate task at hand for Henard, who plans to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant and will begin her studies at UNT in January, is to win two more matches this week and hoist a championship trophy. She has confidence in herself and especially her team, to accomplish the goal, and attributes the confidence in the Lady Eagles’ chemistry, and Brock’s approach to winning.

“This is the closest team I have been on since playing Brock volleyball,” Amy confided. “And that is off the court and on. We all like and love each other and would do anything for each other.”

The close-knit team, led by Henard and three other of her ‘sister seniors,’ hope to do well by each other this week. Brock plays its state semifinal match on Thursday, meeting Holliday at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. First serve is set for 3 p.m. The Class 2A finals will be played Saturday.

  • Summer athletic camps — July/August

    Staff Report

Summer athletic camps become a bit more “meaningful” in the late days of July and into  August, at least for some high school and middle school athletes.

In most cases, the youth football camps include grades 6 through 8, and though there is no contact involved, some of the instructors of he camp may be getting a preview of the talent coming their way in just a few short weeks.

Team volleyball camps, stretching from grades 4 through 12, provides a segway for many of the campers who will soon be entering workouts for the impending volleyball season.
