The Weatherford Kangaroos varsity and JV will have their annual Blue-White game on Thursday, heralding the completion of the spring drills for 2013. Anticipation is unavoidable for any renewal of spring football practices, but this year brings an understandably heightened interest.
Head coach Weldon Nelms, fresh off a Class 3A state football championship season while directing Wimberley, took over the WISD football program earlier this year. With his offensive and defensive coordinators from last season in tow, to join coaches already at Weatherford and a few more to come, the staff has been bringing the aspiring Roos of Fall 2013 up to speed on new schemes on both sides of the ball.
The junior varsity will begin their scrimmage format at 5 p.m. on Thursday, affording the opportunity to look at a lot of different players. The varsity will follow with more of a game-type format, pitting the best defense against the best offense, and keeping score with the defense getting points for turnovers and stops.
Coach Nelms reports the need for additional improvement in several areas for the Roos, but that he has seen areas getting better through the course of spring drills.
