Regional semifinals scheduled for Aledo, Brock softball
Aledo’s young women go west this week, seeking additional fortune in the state softball playoffs. The Class 4A, Region I semifinal series will match District 7 champion Aledo against the District 1 winner El Paso Chapin’s Lady Huskies, who eliminated Plainview in two games last weekend.
The encounter will take place at the Ratliffe Softball Complex in Odessa. The first game is set for Friday, with a 7 p.m. start. Game 2 will be a 1 p.m. first pitch. Should a rubber match be necessary, it will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 2.
Brock’s Lady Eagles will also carry the banner to the regional semifinals in Class 2A, Region II competition. The District 9 champs will step on the diamond Thursday to take on Mt. Vernon’s Purple Tigers, the District 15 winners, in the first game of a best-of-three series. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the entire series will be played Prosper High School.
The second game will skip to Saturday, with a 2 p.m. start. A third game, if needed, will follow Game 2.
Coach considers style adjustment for Dallas running back
IRVING – Dallas Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown likes the players he’s tutoring.
“They are mature guys,” Brown said of lead horse DeMarco Murray, backups Phillip Tanner and Lance Dunbar and fifth-round pick Joseph Randle, who signed a four-year deal worth more than $2 million Monday.
But being a fan of his backs doesn’t necessarily mean Brown is on the same page with them when it comes to their running styles. He and Murray differ over the controversial crown-of-helmet rule the NFL Competition Committee passed in March.
The new rule, designed to make the game safer, penalizes players for lowering the crown of their helmet outside the tackle box.
