McLarty to host parents’ meeting for incoming netters

Weatherford High School head tennis coach Keeley McLarty will be hosting a meeting for the parents of incoming ninth-grade tennis players on Thursday. The hour-long gathering will begin at 6 p.m., and be held in the Outback classroom.

McLarty will hand out summer packets including information about tryouts, summer camps, lessons and tournaments over the summer. The head coach will also explain how the tennis program works at the high school level.

All parents of prospective players are urged to attend.

 

Coaches poll sees Aledo, Brock rising

The Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) softball poll (the latest version released on Monday), has curiously achieved improved accuracy after four weeks of playoff eliminations.

Less than a month ago, the Brock girls were in the second tier of the Top-25 list, ‘languishing’ in the No. 14 spot. The May 20 release has seen the Lady Eagles rise to the No. 4 spot in the Class 2A Top-10 rankings after a 2-1 series win over Mt. Vernon last weekend.

Monday’s Class 4A poll still has Aledo climbing in the coaches’ ratings, as well, as the Ladycats continue to impress. Sweeping the series against El Paso Chapin over the weekend, a team ranked in the top five a week ago, Aledo has zoomed up the charts to equal Brock’s 2A heights — the No. 4 position — quite a jump from the late-April poll, which saw the Ladycats barely making the Top-25 rankings.

Brock and Aledo will try to prove-up the latest, and loftier listings this weekend, as each vie for a berth at the state tournament, playing Pilot Point and Wolfforth Frenship, respectively, in regional final series.

 

Looming summer months herald start for athletic camps

As the 2012-13 school year wanes, hastening the onset of the summer months, a formidable fare of athletic camps is about to begin. The popularity of the summer camps for kids to learn about particular sports or to improve skills in preparation local offerings are certainly no exception.

Virtually all of the ISDs, as well as Weatherford College, offer up camps for a myriad of sports pursuits, ranging from “major” team sports of football, basketball, baseball and volleyball to a broader spectrum of athletic endeavors, including strength and conditioning.

Camp information will be run in the Democrat’s Sunday Sports throughout the summer, including sponsors, important dates, costs, criteria and contacts

    The Aledo varsity girls golf team won the Class 4A Region I Golf Tournament in Abilene last week. The team of Cheyenne Knight, Taylor Brookshire, Savannah Moody, Quincy Ballard, and Taryn Pittman beat runner-up Byron Nelson by 48 strokes.
