Massey tops 300 at Eagles’ helm

Brock heads toward next milestone with win over district foe Millsap

By GREG WEBB

BROCK — Amidst his 11th year of directing the Brock Eagles baseball team from the dugout and down the third-base line, head coach Chad Massey passed a milestone recently, notching 300 wins as head coach of the varsity baseball team.

The Eagles added another ‘W’ on Friday, hosting Millsap in a District 9-2A match and beat the battling Bulldogs, 8-3.

Looking back at the tally of victories, it has not just been rolling through district schedules to achieve the third century mark, though the Eagles have certainly been adept at doing that — there has been plenty of deep seasons that have added to the count.

Nine years in a row as district champs has been followed up with a bi-district trip in each of the years since Massey took over the Brock program. The Eagles have been Area finalists eight times, progressing to the regional quarter-finals as many times.

With a half dozen regional semifinals, and only one of those years failing to advance to the region finals, Brock has reached the state tournament twice, with a state championship belt to claim, as well.

The Eagles kept the tally going the same direction on Friday, but not without some resistance from the visiting Millsap Bulldogs.

Brock loaded up the bases in the bottom of the first inning, and got its first score on a sac fly from Kolbin Mills, with center fielder Shay Phillips reaching home. Matthew McCartney scored the other run in the inning on a Tyler Nelson single.

After Brock added another run in the second, Millsap put together a rally in the top of the third, letting the Eagles know they might have to earn a win on this night.

Millsap’s Kyle Davis began the resurgence with a bunt single, followed by Bradley Bottoms reaching with a walk. Dalton Thomas’ double to left broke the ice for Millsap, followed by Jeff Bodine’s 2-RBI single to complete the scoring for the inning.

Brock was quick, and long to get back on the scoreboard, putting up two more runs in the bottom half of the third and a run an inning for the balance of the frames.

McCartney was the most prolific hitter, and base runner, on the evening, going 3-for-3 at the plate and crossing the plate three times.

Thomas had a 2-hit night for Millsap, who fell to 2-5 in district. Brock improved to 7-0.
