Record runners ready for district

Weatherford Democrat

—

As the Weatherford track teams get ready for the District 3-5A meet, set to run on Wednesday and Thursday at Kangaroo Stadium, at least a couple of the Roos’ runners may be peaking at the right time.

Weatherford senior Jordan Simmons has been a vital part of the Roos varsity track team since his sophomore year. He has participated in summer track programs through the Mach One Track Club, attended TCU Track camps, as well as running cross country competitions during his high school years.

Simmons embellished his WHS track career and achieved a personal goal recently at the Rough Rider Relays in Saginaw, breaking the school record for the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.91.

Simmons plans to continue running in college and plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

On the front end of her high school track career, Weatherford freshman Madison Cooley is already making strides in the WHS track program. Cooley also set a new school record at the Saginaw meet, finishing the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.75.

Field events will begin at 10 a.m. on both days of the district meet, with running events (Wednesday prelims and Thursday finals) starting around 3 p.m. The 3200-meter finals will run on Wednesday, at 11 a.m.
